MISSION

MAN is a permanent public institution, unique in its kind in Sardinia, dedicated to the study, preservation and promotion of modern and contemporary art. The activity “extramuros”, carried out outside the architectural structures of the museum, supports the internal activity and is proposed as a form of openness to the territory and operational involvement of local communities. It is the idea of “open museum” that affirms itself, a permanent laboratory of artistic investigation and experimentation, a space of production and communication where memory and innovation, research and dissemination, global thinking and local action can coexist.

HISTORY AND LOCATION

The MAN opened to the public in 1999 in a building of the twenties, already the headquarters of the provincial institution, located between the arteries of the historic center of Nuoro. Until 2003 it has been included as an office within the culture sector of the provincial administration. The first nucleus of the collection stems from the amalgamation of some public collections (Province, Municipality, Provincial Tourist Board, Chamber of Commerce). The idea of a provincial art gallery is soon developed into an updated museum project in which the work of research and conservation is accompanied by intense exhibition and laboratory activity. The collection is enriched by new acquisitions and the activity extends to the territorial context. In 2004 the museum acquired management autonomy, becoming an institution without legal personality, and became part of Amaci, the national association of contemporary art museums. In 2013, the MAN received regional recognition as a museum of excellence. The reorganization and development plan foresees the opening of a new exhibition complex, born from the recovery of two historic buildings located in Piazza Sebastiano Satta, and the destination of the current home of the permanent collection.

ACTIVITIES

MAN’s primary activity are the temporary exhibitions, to which the museum regularly devotes itself, proposing itself as a place of research and communication of the most innovative phenomena of artistic production, within the framework of a dynamic cultural perspective in which local identity coexists and is strengthened in comparison with the global artistic circuit thanks to exchanges with other museums and new productions. In line with its mission, the MAN offers exhibitions dedicated to artists and movements of art history from the nineteenth to the twenty-first century and experimental projects aimed at the languages of the strictest contemporary. The activity “extramuros”, carried out outside the architectural structures of the museum, supports the internal activity and is proposed as a form of openness to the territory and operational involvement of local communities.
