Program 2024 – ART AND THE NATURAL WORLD

After a year of research dedicated to the art-architecture combination, the MAN of Nuoro is pleased to present a program which, for 2024, will be concentrated around a highly topical theme. In a time of climate change and new energy and environmental policies, it will be important to rethink our relationship with the world and its transformations, entrusting art and its languages with a story that ideally prefigures our relationship with the environment natural. The Museum, as an observatory of current situations, a place for developing content and amplifying fundamental topics for the community, will continue to promote reflections that stimulate debate, comparison and, above all, growth; as happened in the case of the exhibition on the genesis of Picasso’s Guernica or the significant project focused on the history of the Odessa Staircase.

The imagined affinities

Works from the MAN collection. Memberships #3

The MAN returns to present the masterpieces of its historical collection in a large and complete exhibition, reinterpreted in the light of new investigations and in the aftermath of the publication of the catalogue, published by Officina Libraria with the title “100 Masterpieces from the MAN collection”. A 360-degree survey of acquisitions, donations and loans will allow us to read the connections between subjects and authors, iconographies and variants in a different way. The installation inspired by a sort of time machine – unlike the classic chronological progression – will create short circuits, comings and goings, flashbacks and leaps into the contemporary – in order to stimulate in the visitor a new reflection on possible connections, affinities, legacies of style or of content.

Project Room

Micol Roubini. The magic mountain.

a project by Micol Roubini with Lo scuola dell’arte _ curated by Gabi Scardi

Project created thanks to the support of the Italian Council (XI edition, 2022), program for the international promotion of Italian art of the General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture.

Video installation work, set in the abandoned asbestos quarry of Balangero, about thirty kilometers from Turin. The work analyzes the dense network of relationships between man and territory, a true ecosystem that extends from the quarry to the small inhabited centers on its slopes. Three moments converge in the video work: the dreamlike imagination of those who today live near the former quarry, the process of colonization of contaminated land by plants and lichens and the suggestions at the origin of the very history of the use of Asbestos, a mineral that since ancient times has been considered magical due to its extraordinary fire-retardant properties.

Giorgio Andreotta Calò | In girum imus nocte

Winner of the PAC tender

The work Productive it is the result of a series of core samples that the artist found in the archives of the historic company Carbosulcis Spa, the last company active in Italy in coal extraction and which ended its mining activity in 2017. Extracted in the Sulcis Iglesiente area, the samples of earth, minerals and organic deposits obtained from drilling and soil sampling, up to a depth of over 400 meters below sea level, reached approximately 2000 linear meters of material rearranged in segments, analyzed and recomposed according to the methods of a geognostic survey. Beyond the technical process and the investigation carried out by Andreotta Calò from 2013 to 2018, these core samples become a symbol of a social history, that of the community of miners and fishermen of Sulcis and the identity crisis of their sector; but they become a symbol of a collective heritage and of a reuse of vestiges destined for disposal. Ecological commitment marries social investigation in the film In girum imus nocte, filmed by the artist at night on the trail of a journey carried out alongside the workers in the Carbosulcis mine and which entered, together with the sculptures Pinna Nobilis And Dogod, in the MAN collection thanks to the Ministry’s PAC tender, won in 2023.

THE LAST LAMENTATION | Performance, Video, Installation

Winner of the tender Italian Council

Crossroads of today’s diasporas, the Sea reverberates through the choral reconstruction of a performance inspired by the ancient tradition of professional mourning, which connects the lament of Sardinia – the artist’s birthplace – with that of the neighboring countries. Conceived as a ritual to participate in rather than a show to watch, the Last Lamentation it is a shared cry that tells of the tragedy of the sea and reaches the entire Mediterranean basin. Orchestrated by 15 women who, with their backs to the audience, mark the landscape through their dark presences, the ritual is made up of a repetitive and hypnotic vocal and choreographic score that reworks the ritual codes in contemporary and abstract forms, simple gestures that hybridize the dance vocabulary with signs coming from the archaeological and ethnographic heritage, a preverbal language which, in a crescendo, aims to find a culminating moment and develops from a breath into a sigh and a cry.

DIORAMA. Generation Earth_Generation Earth

After the great critical and public success of the 2022 Sensorama exhibition, the museum is proposing a new, gigantic environment for the summer of 2024 which, unraveling across all floors of the building, evokes a journey, a crossing of works of art site specific, linked together by a single current theme. The idea – also supported by indisputable scientific reasons – that our generation is the first forced to deal with the realistic hypothesis of the end of the species, leads to a strong sense of bewilderment and anxiety. Reversing this perspective, the “Diorama” proposal offers a sequence of environments that host the visions of international artists, whose works, created with different media, present the image of a nature transformed, manipulated or purposely recreated as an indirect reflection of the new reality that is being determined. The transformations and changes taking place go beyond nature itself, becoming “other” and taking on new meanings. If the degradation of the natural environment is there for all to see, artists can invite us to reverse course, laying the foundations for a new imagination. Like a greenhouse production, nature is here recreated and imitated, immortalized and proposed in that moment considered most representative and evocative. Fixed in a sculptural form or sealed in the fabric circuit, re-proposed by the sensitivity of artificial intelligence, it acquires an unusual dynamism and a new reality. The public will inhabit, from room to room, new horizons, dotted with other suns and other stars.
