Nuoro Drive _ Cristian Chironi

1 Dec 2023

With the aim of promoting the link between art and architecture, the MAN presents the performance Nuoro Drive by Cristian Chironi , which will take place in Nuoro on Friday 1 December, in conjunction with Living is a language , the artist’s personal exhibition which can be visited on the second floor of the museum.

During Nuoro Drive the public is invited to board a renamed Fiat 127 Special Chameleon for its ability to change the color of the bodywork depending on the places where it stops and personalized following the color combinations typical of Le Corbusier’s houses in which the artist lives and works. Le Corbusier’s slogan “a house is a machine for living” is thus reinterpreted, giving life to a mobile environment that condenses signs of travel and transit, in a remix of stories, trajectories and values.

The decision to use the Fiat 127 Special originates from an anecdote that links Chironi to the artist Costantino Nivola, friend and collaborator of Le Corbusier. Although in different eras, both Chironi and Nivola left their country of origin, Orani, and returned there after some time, after a series of meetings that changed their respective visions of living.

The project has its roots in a story told to Chironi by Daniele, nephew of Costantino Nivola. In the early 1980s, Nivola, now ill, wrote from New York to his nephew Daniele, asking him to go to his home in Dicomano, Tuscany, in a last attempt to bring all his things back to Orani. Daniele remembers: «He told me: “Try to take what is there. Including the car! There are two artistic posters of a certain value… Steinberg”. There were his sculptures, paintings by Maria Lai, Pintori, Fancello… His Picasso was no longer there. In the end I even had to leave some sketches. There wasn’t everything in the car.” This is how Daniele embarks from the port of Civitavecchia with a Fiat 127 loaded with works of art, returning to the town with the awareness of having brought with him only a small part of that cultural and existential heritage.

Many years after that journey, Chironi reuses the Fiat 127 with an artistic and performative awareness, in a journey made of departures and returns, generational correspondences, meetings and imaginary visions recorded from the window.

Friday 1st December Chameleon it will be guided by the artist around the historic center of Nuoro, in a journey of urban reflection on the themes of travel, living, crossing borders and social transformations. Nuoro Drive unites participants in a shared experience that invites reflection on topics ranging from migration, memory, homemaking and sense of place.

Each performance will be open to a maximum of four passengers who will be involved in a conversation that will shed light on the itinerary undertaken. Together with the stories of Cristian Chironi and his guests, you will be able to listen to the sound compositions created in collaboration with various musicians and sound designers: Francesco Brasini, Alessandro Bosetti, Massimo Carozzi, Daniela Cattivilli, Coro di Radio France, Paolo Fresu, Stefano Pilia, Francesco Serra, Henrik Svedlund, Dominique Vaccaro, Sophie Vitelli, and the unpublished contribution of the multi-instrumentalist from Nuoro Gavino Murgia.
