THE PHOTO SOLSTICE#4 – GAVOI – 14/19 JUNE 2022

13 Jun 2022

Gavoi – 13 June 2022 – He returns to the heart of Barbagia The Photo Solstice , the project dedicated to photography by Fondazione di Sardegna as part of AR/S Arte Condivisa in Sardegna curated by Marco Delogu and organized in collaboration with the Municipality of Gavoi. Inaugurated in 2018 in the Asinara National Park and now in its fourth edition, it will take place from 14 to 19 June in Gavoi, the municipality that will host the workshops and talks of the 2022 programme. The former involve the participation of 17 participants (from over 200 applications received, a figure growing year on year) selected through a open call ended May 22nd. They will settle together with tutors and speakers in widespread accommodation and study spaces to discuss the key themes of photography. The heart of this year’s edition will be three workshops held respectively by Marco Delogu, George Georgiou and Vanessa Winship, Jem Southam. The participants will be divided into three distinct groups and will work on a collective project contributing with their individualities. At the end of the three-day workshop there will be a presentation and a moment of exchange between the three groups, who will thus be able to interface and share their different experiences.

As regards the talks, however, on Friday 17th at Sa Caserma Betza the public talks will be held which will see Luca Spano’s conversations alternating with Emanuela manca and Maurizio Bosa, at 6pm and entitled “Eyes Touching Hands”, by Marco Delogu with Plinio De Martiis at 7pm and entitled “Beyond Photography” and by Jem Southam at 8pm entitled “Landscape Stories”. While on Saturday 18 June at 6pm there will be a public talk by Silvio Pons, “Gramsci and iconography”, at 7pm that of Vanessa Winship with the presentation of “She Dances on Jackson” and at 8pm that of with Simon Baker entitled “On curating Photography – From the Tate Modern in London to the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris”.

“The Photo Solstice has become one of the events that is a source of great satisfaction for the Sardinia Foundation. This program is part of the broader ARS / Shared art in Sardinia project, a project with which the Sardinia Foundation promotes cultural events, original productions and publications also in collaboration with the cultural institutions of our region.” Says Franco Carta, Head of Heritage Management for the Sardinia Foundation and of the ARS project.

The 2022 edition of The Photo Solstice had a first preview on Saturday 28 May with the inauguration in the premises of the Betza Barracks in Gavoi of the exhibition “Gavoi exposes TPS#3” curated by Marco Delogu and resulting from the collaboration of AR/S with “Lakana_del mondo città”. The exhibition presents the photographic works carried out by the three groups of participants in the workshops of the 2021 edition of The Photo Solstice . The TPS#4 program therefore continues with the workshops which will begin on Tuesday 14 June and will end with the talks and meetings which will be held starting from Friday 17 June in Gavoi.

“We are happy to give continuity to this initiative which has been animating our territory for some years now and which also chooses it for moments of great involvement such as that of the exhibition of photographic works from the 2021 edition of The Photo Solstice. This indicates that regardless of where we find ourselves on the island, if there is good harmony between proponents and administrations, very beautiful things can be born – says Salvatore Lai, – Mayor of Gavoi – This phase coincides with a strong restart for Gavoi which in the in a few weeks it will host two major events: this wonderful exhibition, the fourth edition of The Photo Solstice and the Isola delle Storie festival in July. Particular thanks go to Franco Carta of the Sardinia Foundation and to Marco Delogu for having once again identified us as a place to represent this extraordinary work.”

“The fourth edition of The Photo Solstice confirms the concentration on ‘fieldwork’ – says Marco Delogu, Photographer and Curator – We have kept the strong idea, year after year, through the various ‘Sardinia Commissions’ and the work of many workshop participants to build a large collection based on the relationship between very identifying authors and the landscape and population of Sardinia. The exhibition ‘Gavoi exposes TPS#3’ is a concrete and tangible testimony of this. We are curious to see where the dialogues and exchanges of this 2022 edition will take us.”

This edition brings the dates of TPS back to those of the summer solstice and confirms the choice of a district with a high cultural vocation such as the one that lives around Gavoi, a municipality already known for its liveliness and sensitivity to the issues of intangible cultural heritage in genre and has always been active in creating moments of dissemination and contamination at an international level. The heart of this year’s edition will be the three workshops into which the participants will be divided. They will have the task of involving, transmitting, sharing and making the organizational structure of the workshops fluid which, although divided, will provide ample opportunity for discussion, ideas and contamination both with the other participants and with the managers of the individual workshop.
